Masai Ujiri will have a lot of power to make decisions in Dallas, and rightfully so.

The Dallas Mavericks finally addressed their GM search on Monday afternoon, as they have hired Masai Ujiri to be their team president and alternate governor. While titles for GMs can be somewhat interchangeable, Ujiri is the first executive in the league to boast the title of alternate governor, which speaks to the power he'll have in Dallas' front office.

Many Mavericks fans feared Patrick Dumont may try to hire a GM who would be less outspoken compared to Dumont as far as roster decisions were concerned, as Dumont was obviously taken advantage of by Nico Harrison amidst the Luka Doncic trade. However, Ujiri is one of the most proactive executives in the modern era, and while he'll certainly value input from Dumont and other front office members, he's going to be calling the shots in Dallas for the most part.

Ujiri's title in Dallas puts him in a unique position

Getting an executive of Ujiri's caliber is all Mavericks fans could've hoped for after Harrison was fired in November, as he won NBA Executive of the Year in 2013, and helped the Toronto Raptors win the NBA Championship in 2019 following a massive deal where he flipped DeMar DeRozan for Kawhi Leonard.

With the NBA Draft Lottery just six days away, Dumont couldn't have picked a better time to hire a lead executive like Ujiri, as he'll have enough time to fully evaluate a loaded 2026 NBA Draft class, and can make the best pick depending on where Dallas lands in the lottery. Ujiri will have his fair share of challenges as well, considering Dallas' lack of control over their future first-rounders until 2031, but this is where his experience will be crucial.

Had Dallas not gotten Cooper Flagg, landing a top executive like Ujiri may have proven to be more challenging, but Ujiri is inheriting one of the best young prospects in the league now, and the Mavericks already have the infrastructure to be a playoff team again next year with Kyrie Irving coming back.

Masai Ujiri is going to be calling the shots in Dallas

Ujiri should make good use of Dallas' MLE this summer, and he brings a completely unbiased perspective to the Mavericks after having been out of the NBA this past year. Even in recent history, Ujiri had a big part in making the Raptors a playoff team again, as he helped put together many of the pieces that led the Raptors to a Game 7 in the first round versus the Cleveland Cavaliers this playoffs, even if he was relieved of duties last June.

Ujiri is a fun personality to add to Dallas' front office, and his acumen aside, it's clear he'll be the main decision maker based on his title of alternate governor, as Dumont is still relatively new to the NBA. The Mavericks and Dumont absolutely nailed this hire, even if it took the debacle of the Doncic trade and Harrison firing to get here, as they now have the perfect GM to kickstart the Flagg era.

Ujiri could've gone somewhere like the Chicago Bulls, who have a notoriously more involved governor in Michael Reinsdorf, but he chose Dallas instead, which could be in part due to the trust and decision-making leash Dumont is giving him. The Mavericks absolutely aced this hire, and Dumont is taking the right steps by letting Ujiri call the shots, as Ujiri is vetted enough to never make a mistake as catastrophic as the Doncic trade was, and can help Dallas build a contender.
