Mavericks finally make the Moussa Cisse move fans were begging for

Dallas Mavericks fans have been adamant that re-signing Moussa Cisse was the most obvious signing they could make this offseason, and the Mavericks finally made the move they were begging for on Saturday night by matching the New York Knicks' two-year, $4.7 million offer sheet. While the decision to re-sign Cisse seemed like a no-brainer for many fans and media members, many fans were still worried Dallas would let the promising young center slip through the cracks.

This move was pivotal for the Mavericks for a variety of reasons, as Masai Ujiri and company needed to lock down Cisse, given the status of Dallas' current big-man rotation. Dereck Lively II's latest injury update wasn't encouraging in the slightest, as Lively II has only barely started to walk without aid and doesn't project to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Daniel Gafford is set to assume the starting center position for the Mavericks as things currently stand, but Gafford has been prominent in trade rumors, and his status with the organization is up in the air, which made re-signing Cisse more important than ever.

All that being said, Cisse is set to assume a real role as Dallas' primary backup center, and potentially be their starter if Gafford gets dealt, so it was essential that Dallas matched New York's offer sheet here.

Many Mavericks fans hoped that the Cisse deal would be one of the first pieces of business for the organization this offseason, and even if it got to a point where another team pitched Cisse an offer sheet, Dallas ultimately didn't play with their food and understood the importance of retaining the 23-year-old big man.

As much as fans and media members thought Cisse would be coming back this offseason, it's a huge sigh of relief that Dallas actually matched the offer sheet to retain him. He brings a great deal of energy every time he hits the floor and fits Dallas' timeline around Cooper Flagg well, given his age.

Re-signing Cisse is an absolute win for the Mavericks

Sure, Cisse still needs to make some strides in his offensive game to really hone in on his potential, but there's no doubt he's already a dynamic two-way big man. He's a stellar shot blocker, is athletic enough to guard in space on occasion, and is a very good put-back finisher and play finisher.

It makes complete sense why the Knicks would try to pounce on someone like Cisse for cheap following the departure of Mitchell Robinson, but the Mavericks held their ground and made the right move by bringing him back. Cisse has barely scratched the surface of his potential, and he could even surpass Lively II as Dallas' best young big man if he continues to develop at a high rate.

With much still to come in Dallas' offseason, depending on whether they trade one of their veterans or not, re-signing Cisse was touted as the most essential piece of business for the team to complete this offseason by many media members. Dallas didn't have to exert many financial resources to get this done, and this deal could ultimately look like a home run as the next season or two progresses.
