Mavericks fans will love Masai Ujiri's brutally simple focus for Dallas

The Mavericks aren't in a position to be tanking anymore, and luckily for fans, this isn't Masai Ujiri's philosophy whatsoever.

When the Dallas Mavericks hired Masai Ujiri as team president and alternate governor last week, it quickly became apparent that Ujiri has one singular focus: winning at a high level. Ujiri didn't get to properly celebrate the Toronto Raptors' 2019 NBA Championship due to an on-court scandal following their victory, as it has been overwhelmingly clear since the moment he got hired that he wants to win another NBA Finals and be able to properly celebrate it.

He has been vocal about this in multiple media availabilities since he came to Dallas, and his hunger to win again came up when talking to reporters following the NBA Draft Lottery. Long story short, Mavericks fans are going to love how badly he wants to win.

"There's nothing important as winning in sports," Ujiri said. "It's all about winning. And we'll win in Dallas."

The Mavericks have been starved of their winning culture over the past two seasons, particularly since the Luka Doncic trade. Landing Cooper Flagg No. 1 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft is the biggest accelerator to bringing back a winning brand of basketball to Dallas, and now Ujiri and company must figure out how to best fine-tune the roster around Flagg to be contenders once again.

Masai Ujiri is completely focused on winning a championship in Dallas

While Dallas will have the ninth pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, they have no control over their future first-round draft capital until 2031 after that, so there's practically no point in going through a multi-year rebuild, especially with the new anti-tanking rules coming into effect next season.

The Mavericks already have a talented core, and still have many pieces from their 2024 NBA Finals run, but Flagg and Doncic are completely different players, meaning that some of the pieces from 2024 may not be ideal pairings with Flagg long-term. Players such as P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, and Daniel Gafford could all be subject to being shopped on the trade market this summer or next season, as Ujiri holds no internal bias, given he just came to Dallas a week ago.

Ujiri is set to evaluate Dallas' organization and roster from the top down, as he has at every other stop in his career, so it will be very intriguing to see what kind of tinkering he does to Dallas' roster by the beginning of next season.

This is exactly what Mavericks fans needed following Nico Harrison

Based on his opening presser, though, it's clear he doesn't have an intention of trading superstar guard Kyrie Irving at the moment, as he sees Irving as a great veteran presence alongside Flagg, as well as an elite shot creator and ball handler still.

Following Nico Harrison's tenure as Mavericks GM, the Mavericks needed a new executive who is singularly focused on winning and will be the face of the organization to the media. Harrison tried to say all the right things and justify his ill-advised trade of Doncic, but his moves spoke for themselves, as he selfishly threw away Dallas' future due to his favoritism for Anthony Davis over Doncic.

Ujiri would never make such a colossal mistake, and the philosophy of his moves will be justified by what he tells the media, even if they don't pan out in the long run. It may have taken the Mavericks becoming the laughingstock of the NBA for a while, but Mavericks fans should be elated that the organization is now run by someone like Ujiri, who values winning above all else and won't be swayed by personal bias in his decision-making process.
