The Dallas Mavericks need to fix their 3-point shooting badly after shooting 34.4 percent from three on 31.9 attempts per game (26th and 27th in the NBA, respectively) last season, and one player whom they have interest in signing has real potential to help make this issue a thing of the past. Their inability to space the floor was embarrassing during Cooper Flagg's rookie season, and they have to get back on track.
Dallas wants to bring Tarik Biberovic over sooner rather than later
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks "have opened discussions with (Tarik Biberovic's) representatives about potentially bringing the sharpshooter to Dallas as early as next season." Many fans expected the 6-foot-6 wing to be a draft-and-stash prospect after they acquired his draft rights last week, but this report proves that the Mavs think of him as much more than that. They're eyeing a move that brings him to the U.S. soon.
He's a sneaky pickup that could quickly turn into a role player in Dallas once they bring him over, and it wouldn't take him long to go from relatively unknown to a fan-favorite. Mavs fans love their shooters, and after not having much to cheer about last season, Biberovic would help fix that problem.
The Mavs are thinking about having him on their roster as soon as next season, but first, they would have to buy him out of his contract with Fenerbahce. Dallas could contribute up to $900,000 to this buyout, and it's easy to understand why after watching how poorly they shot from long range last season.
Biberovic's shooting is elite
Dallas acquired the draft rights to Tarik Biberovic, the No. 56 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, in the Santi Aldama trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, and if you're not familiar with his game, you need to be. Biberovic shot 48.9 percent from three in 25 games for Fenerbahce in the Turkish Basketball Super League last season, and 3-point shooting is his specialty.
While he has other skills, shooting is his bread and butter. Biberovic drills tough shots off the catch and off the dribble, and he can do so while moving as well. Shooting is vital in today's NBA, and after trading for Marcus Sasser and Aldama, Biberovic would be the addition that helps fully revitalize Dallas' long-range shooting.
Sasser, Aldama, and Biberovic are all volume 3-point shooters, and while Aldama may be the flashiest pickup given that he is a 7-footer who shoots five threes per game at a decent clip, Biberovic has real long-term upside. He's just 25 years old, and the Mavericks adding another rookie to their roster would be an incredible move.
Biberovic would be an ideal fit in Dallas
They already have Morez Johnson Jr., Sergio De Larrea, and Tobi Lawal signed for next season, and Biberovic would easily be the best shooter of this group. De Larrea has great touch as well, but not like Biberovic.
While he has some oomph to his off-the-bounce game when defended by slower defenders, his shooting is what makes him elite.
He would feast while playing alongside players with strong on-ball gravity like Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, and his off-ball gravity would make life easier for these players as well. His fit in Dallas is easy to see, and if the Mavericks buy him out, fans should be excited about the role he could play as soon as the 2026-27 season.
