The thrill of the Dallas Mavericks blowing out the Indiana Pacers on Friday night quickly turned to fear near the end of the second quarter. Cooper Flagg was pushing the ball up the court, and Aaron Nesmith fouled him from behind as he went up for an open dunk.

Flagg hit the floor hard and landed on his left shoulder. This was the same shoulder that gave him some problems as a rookie, and he was clearly in some pain. Naji Marshall sprinted from half court to stick up for Flagg, as Nesmith's foul was clearly a reckless play, and Dallas' star player never returned to the game.

Mavericks reveal the severity of Cooper Flagg's shoulder injury

The Mavericks ruled him out for the remainder of the game with left shoulder soreness, but Saturday's update brought encouraging news. An MRI revealed that Flagg suffered "a mild shoulder sprain," and he will be re-evaluated next week.

While Flagg won't play in tonight's home opener against the San Antonio Spurs, the fact that his injury is mild should give Mavs fans much more confidence than before about his long-term status. The Mavericks haven't announced a return date, and his recovery should determine whether he can return to help his team amid the tough stretch of games they have ahead.

After tonight's game against San Antonio, Dallas plays Miami, Oklahoma City, Houston, and the Spurs again, all within the next 11 days, and that would've been an extremely tough span of games to lose Cooper for. This isn't to say that Flagg will be ready by Monday night's game against the Heat, or even Wednesday's game against the Thunder, but it seems like the Mavs dodged a disaster following the results of today's MRI.

Dallas can't afford to lose Flagg for long

Dallas needs Flagg as healthy as possible this season, as his status could be one of the main keys to the team reaching the playoffs, and him suffering a severe injury would've thrown a massive wrench into a season that suddenly looked promising after Friday's 16-point win.

The Mavericks would've been forced to rely on just Kyrie Irving for extended time, and this would've put the 34-year-old star in a tough spot. Dallas is slowplaying his minutes at the beginning of this season, as he missed all of last season with a torn ACL, and he would've been forced to shoulder a massive load on offense.

Ironically, Irving tore his ACL in March of 2025, just over a month after the team traded Luka Doncic, and Anthony Davis was out of the lineup when Kyrie got injured. The pressure to keep the Mavs above water until Flagg returns would've been evident, fair or not, putting him in a dangerous position at the beginning of the season.

The Mavericks still need to announce Flagg's return timeline before MFFLs can fully exhale, but Saturday's MRI delivered an encouraging outcome following a dangerous play that could've ended up being much worse. There is still no confirmation of when he'll return, but avoiding a more serious injury is relieving.
