Cooper Flagg is only 19 years old, and his thoughts on this matter could very well change as his career evolves, but Flagg recently hinted he wants to be in Dallas for the rest of his life in an interview with WFAA, and the Dallas Mavericks can't afford to mess up Flagg's long-term vision.

“Dallas has been amazing. It’s a beautiful city. Incredible people," Flagg told WFAA's Dia Wall. "There’s not much to complain about. I wish it would cool down a little bit, it’s been a very hot summer. That’s my only complaint. And you know what, if that’s what I complain about in the place I live for the rest of my life, I have worse things to worry about.”

Mavs can't lose Flagg with him already wanting to be a Maverick for life

Of course, Flagg could be talking about the city of Dallas in general, and not necessarily the Mavericks organization, but it's more than likely he's referring to them as one and the same here. The Mavericks have been extremely fortunate to have three franchise-leading players exhibit the same sort of loyalty and mindset that Flagg is already showing to Dallas at such a young age.

Dirk Nowitzki brought Dallas a championship in 2011 and played 21 seasons for the Mavericks, and the team never faltered in terms of their loyalty to Nowitzki. However, fans know all too well how this ideology of loyalty to a franchise centerpiece was completely fractured when Nico Harrison blindsided Luka Doncic in February of 2025 by trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Harrison's decision to trade Doncic came amidst Doncic openly stating he wanted to play in Dallas for the rest of his career multiple times. However unlikely it is that the Mavericks would ever let someone as ill-sighted as Harrison creep into a position of power to trade their franchise superstar, there are still other ways they could lose Flagg eventually.

Losing Flagg after Doncic would be disastrous for Dallas

Giannis Antetokounmpo expressed his loyalty to the Milwaukee Bucks countless times and brought them a championship, yet basically finagled his way into a trade to the Miami Heat because of the Bucks' inability to stay competitive ever since the new CBA came out.

Flagg is cut from the same cloth as someone like Antetokounmpo in terms of wanting to win at all costs, and while nothing is even close to dire yet, Flagg may not tolerate the Mavericks forever if they fail time and time again to establish themselves as a winning team. This would obviously be a worst-case scenario, but it's definitely not impossible by any means, so the Mavericks need to do everything in their power to build a perennial playoff team around Flagg.

The Mavericks shouldn't have lucked into getting the opportunity to get another franchise centerpiece that has openly expressed his desire to be a Maverick for life so quickly following the Doncic atrocity, but clearly the basketball gods gave them a get-out-of-jail-free card for Harrison's transgressions.

The Mavericks can't afford to play the wrong hand this time, though, and need to cash that card in to keep Flagg in Dallas for as long as he wants to be a Maverick.
