The NBA trade deadline is almost here, and the Dallas Mavericks are no strangers to rumors, as the team is open to trading several players, with Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving being untouchable. However, the team can also add P.J. Washington to the list of players it won't trade. Remember, the Mavs' forward signed an extension this past offseason, and it activated a six-month trade restriction.
This, though, could be a problem for Dallas in the future. The team has shifted its focus to building around Flagg, and if they were able to trade Washington, this could be beneficial. He would be able to bring in tremendous value, as Washington would be a huge asset to a playoff team. In simple terms, any plans the Mavs have to rebuild could be put on hold since they can't trade Washington, as he is one of their most valuable assets.
Not to mention, Washington unfortunately doesn't look like he'll be a long-term fit next to Flagg. Most of his skills don't complement Flagg's impact on the game. This is an issue because Flagg is already a superior playmaker, so Washington would likely limit his progression in the NBA. Especially considering his lack of shooting and the fact that Flagg and Washington play the same position.
Again, this is why Dallas should wish that they could trade Washington now. They need to start gearing up for the future, and Washington limits the rebuild. Not to mention, the Mavs have it clear that Flagg is their future. They must start their rebuild ASAP.
Mavericks can't trade P.J. Washington despite his rough fit
However, there is one solution to the problem above: Trade Washington this coming offseason.
As mentioned, if Dallas can move on while netting significant draft capital or young players, this would benefit the organization in numerous ways. Something that all starts with rebuilding around Flagg.
Some fans, though, might not like the idea of trading Washington. They could question why Dallas would trade a player who helped the team make the NBA Finals two years ago.
Yet, the answer extends beyond Cooper Flagg. Washington hasn't taken the leap the team needed. He has struggled to replicate his past success, as injuries have started to take their toll. Plus, his 3-point shooting has taken a major dip this season. Those are enough reasons to believe why he hasn't lived up to the hype.
Dallas, though, can't trade Washington unless he does his part. Washington must play at a high level and revert to his old ways. This means he should improve his 3-point shooting and continue playing defense at an elite level. If he can't continue showcasing his talents, then it'll make things easier for the Mavs to trade him in the future.
A P.J. Washington trade seems to have benefits if the Mavs explore this. But none of this can begin until the offseason when he becomes trade-eligible. So, fans can only wait and see if Dallas follows through with a trade. Remember, nothing can ever be ruled when it comes to the Mavericks organization.
