Mavericks already have the fix for their biggest problem but can't use it yet

The Mavericks' offensive concerns already have a simple answer.

Since trading Luka Doncic before last season's trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks' offense has been a shell of itself, especially after Kyrie Irving tore his ACL shortly after Doncic's departure. Ever since Irving was sidelined with his knee injury, Dallas has struggled with their outside shooting and drawing double-teams to create open shots for others.

While Cooper Flagg has been impressive, the Mavericks are still lacking a playmaker who can draw double teams and make flashy passes or buckets, which is why a healthy Kyrie Irving is the answer to a bulk of Dallas' offensive concerns. With a healthy Irving, the Mavericks would truly have a primary playmaker, which would not only instantly jolt Dallas' offense, but it would help Flagg get easier and more open looks at the basket.

A healthy Kyrie Irving fixes Dallas' biggest offensive problem

Since this offensive drought has plagued the Mavericks, their need for a playmaker and primary ball handler has never been greater, which are both attributes that Irving excels at. Not only will the ball finally get moving in Dallas the second Irving touches the floor next season, but it should also be with a fresh roster around him of Flagg, another young rookie star, and other players.

Dallas may aim to add more shooting this offseason, depending on how their two-night draft process goes, but regardless of how the offseason is sectioned out, Irving's mere presence will automatically free up the offense. The Mavericks aimed to have Flagg take the bulk of the offensive workload this season, and while he has looked talented in stretches, it was unlikely to begin with that Flagg was Dallas' next primary ball-handler, especially with Irving next to his side.

Not only does Irving's explosiveness already make him a must-watch player that forces double teams, but his 3-point shot and even touch around the rim may also just be enough of an offensive punch to give Dallas a pulse on that end of the floor. It goes without saying, but players shoot the ball better when they are wide open or when they are receiving perfect dimes that land in their shooter's pocket.

Dallas still must ace this offseason, even with Kyrie Irving

The reality of today's NBA is that one man or duo is not enough to go and win a championship, which is why roster building has never been more important. Sure, a year-two Flagg and a young rookie next to him will be fun to watch along with a healthy Irving, but Dallas will need to ace this offseason if they expect to have better luck than the previous two seasons.

Without sole possession of their 2027 first-round pick, the Mavericks will be forced to win games with a major penalty for losing for the first time in three seasons. Adding Irving to next year's roster will be a blessing in itself, but if Dallas makes the right offseason additions, this roster may have its best chance at making the playoffs in years.
