The Dallas Mavericks should've never traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, and former teammate Spencer Dinwiddie knows it. Dinwiddie spent multiple seasons by Doncic's side, as the two helped lead the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in 2022. He didn't hold back when asked about Doncic in a recent podcast episode, and Mavericks fans stand by everything he said.

Dinwiddie was a guest on "To The Baha," and he revealed that he would've given Doncic the supermax extension and kept him as one of the leaders of the team rather than trading him to the Lakers. Nico Harrison convinced Patrick Dumont that giving Doncic the supermax would've been a massive mistake, but Dinwiddie disagrees heavily.

"I would have gave him the money," Dinwiddie said about Doncic. "I would've gave him the money and wouldn't have thought twice about it. Wouldn't have even hesitated."

Spencer Dinwiddie would've never traded Luka Doncic

This is one of the most flawed parts of the entire Luka Doncic trade saga. He proved that he was worth a supermax extension by making five All-NBA First Teams in a row and leading the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2024, and Dallas should've been locked in on signing him to this deal all along.

Signing any player of Doncic's caliber to a supermax extension is a no-brainer, as any team would love to pay a 26-year-old superstar that type of money to lead their franchise. Doncic had just finished in the top three in MVP voting in the season prior, and he became a global icon.

Doncic had proven that he had what it took to lead the Mavericks to the promised land, and every move Dallas made before they traded him had him in mind. The Mavs built the perfect roster around him, but it obviously wasn't good enough for Harrison as he moved on from him less than a year after he led Dallas to their third Western Conference Finals win in franchise history.

Even if the Mavericks were set on trading him, signing him to an extension would've given him a much longer contract, meaning Dallas would've been able to get much more trade value for him. On top of that, they could've pushed for the NBA Finals two more times at least, and if they fell short in both instances, then they could've thought about trading him and created the biggest bidding war in NBA history.

Dallas clearly dropped the ball here, but that isn't the only area that Harrison and the Mavericks screwed up when trading Doncic.

Harrison was turned off by Doncic's poor defensive effort, and his vision of "defense wins championships" did not fit the Slovenian superstar. This was one of the many reasons that he traded Doncic, but Dinwiddie knows that Doncic's offensive wizardry overshadows his defense.

"He's the best offensive player in the world," Dinwiddie said.

Dinwiddie admitted that Doncic is among the worst defending superstars in the league, but you can't overlook his offensive talent. His unreal control of the game, scoring, and ability to make his teammates better in the biggest moments is what led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals.

Their loss to the Boston Celtics had more to do with role players not hitting shots than it did with Doncic's poor defense, and Dinwiddie hit the nail on the head in his assessment of the chatter going on around Doncic recently.

The Mavericks messed up in more ways than one when trading Luka Doncic, and every day that goes by proves this more and more.
