The Lakers need shooting, and the Mavericks may just have the perfect trade target for them to pursue.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently the 28th-ranked team in the NBA in 3-point makes per game at 10.5, and they should look to address this need by trading for Klay Thompson of the Dallas Mavericks. It's known that the Mavericks are going to explore Thompson's trade market ahead of the February trade deadline, and they could look to send him to the Lakers if they feel that they can get decent value back for him.

Dallas and Los Angeles are no strangers to big trades, as they swapped Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis on February 1 of this year, but Nico Harrison and Rob Pelinka agreeing on another trade is something that many Mavericks fans would disagree with. It's widely known that the Mavericks didn't get enough of a return for Doncic when they sent him to Los Angeles, and the Lakers pulling off another lopsided trade with the Mavericks would send the entire city of Dallas into an uproar.

Mavericks fans are never going to get over the fact that Harrison traded Doncic to the Lakers out of nowhere, and any trade that he makes now is going to be under a microscope. Many Mavericks fans seem fine with the team trading Thompson this season, but seeing him end up on the Lakers with Doncic would be a major gut punch.

Lakers are in prime position to steal Klay Thompson from Mavericks

Thompson signed with the Mavericks to play with Doncic and push for another ring, but they only got to play 21 games together. He left the Bay for an opportunity of a lifetime to play with Doncic and Kyrie Irving, two all-world creators who would create countless open looks for him, but he is stuck in a tough spot now.

A trade may be the only way forward for Thompson, and the Lakers are definitely a team to keep an eye on. Especially since they've already been linked to Daniel Gafford.

Doncic proved that he can bring the most out of Thompson when they were teammates last season, and they'd likely pick back up right where they left off if they reunited in Los Angeles. His skip passes to open shooters are a thing of beauty, and considering that the Lakers were interested in Thompson as recently as his free agency last summer, it wouldn't be a shock if they revisit these talks.

Doncic has a knack for making the players around him much better, and Thompson is in desperate need of a change of scenery.

This season for Dallas, Thompson is averaging 7.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 31.6 percent from the field and 26.4 percent from downtown. He is not having the season that Mavericks fans expected out of him after seeing how productive his offseason was, and he has truly hit rock bottom this season.

He is posting career-low numbers, nearly across the board, and Dallas isn't an ideal spot for him anymore. Jason Kidd even elected to move him to the bench for the first time in his Mavericks career earlier this month, and this proves how bad things have been for him. They've become one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the NBA, and without steady point guard play and shot creation, Thompson can't be utilized properly.

He is at his best while playing next to another star guard with major on-ball gravity, as his specialty is knocking down open threes off the catch. He and Doncic were dominant in this way, as he always knew where Thompson was on the floor and looked to get him the ball whenever he could.

The Lakers clearly need more shooting, even though they are 7-3 and one of the top teams in the West, and Thompson could be the answer. His struggles could also lead Los Angeles to get him for a major bargain, and Mavericks fans would be up in arms if he turned his season around and got to reunite with Doncic on the Lakers.
