The Dallas Mavericks have started the 2026-27 season 4-2 despite being doubted by many fans over the summer, and Kyrie Irving's hot start to the season has been a big reason for their success. He is averaging 21.4 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the field, silencing any doubts that he wouldn't be the same player upon returning from a year-long absence after tearing his ACL in March 2025.

Kyrie's early play has been extremely promising for a Mavericks team looking to make the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2024, and he's making it harder for Dallas to move on.

Kyrie Irving is comfortable in Dallas

He is crucial to their success, and a major reason for this is his fit with Cooper Flagg. Irving and Flagg are forming a powerful duo, and Kyrie feels comfortable playing with his new co-star. Coop and Kai have only played five games together, but Irving has enjoyed playing alongside Flagg.

"Kyrie, I think is very, very happy and comfortable with his situation in Dallas," ESPN's Tim MacMahon said in a recent episode of Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective.

Irving's stance on the Mavericks is clear. He's happy where he is right now, and this is exactly why Dallas shouldn't trade him.

The Mavericks should do right by Irving and not trade him

Irving is the longest-tenured player on the team, and unless he requests a trade, the Mavs shouldn't even consider moving on. Mavs fans have a deep connection with Kyrie, as he was one of the few people within the organization who connected with fans about the pain of the Luka Doncic trade, and the organization ripping him away from the fan base two seasons after the Luka trade would not be a good look.

Dallas should do right by Kyrie for the time being, and if he likes what the team has going on, the Mavs should respect that and do what they can to put a complementary roster around him and Flagg. They've already done a decent job of this, as the Mavericks are 4-2 and the No. 7 team in the Western Conference, and the team shouldn't create a problem that doesn't exist by trading him.

Irving's fit alongside Cooper Flagg makes his case to stay even stronger

MacMahon shared that he talked with Kyrie after Dallas' NBA Cup win over the Houston Rockets on Friday night, and he said that "Cooper being this good and this comfortable, like bringing the ball up the floor, initiating offense and all that, it takes a lot of pressure off him and it takes a lot of strain off him."

MacMahon's analysis here reveals another reason why the Mavs shouldn't trade him. Irving is content with playing alongside Flagg despite being 15 years older than him, and Coop's growth as a shot creator is making things so much easier for Kyrie.

Irving doesn't have to carry the entire burden of the offense. He just has to be a complementary piece next to Flagg.

Coop has already proven that he can step up in the biggest moments, and he and Kyrie are showing early signs that they can be a dominant duo. Flagg and Irving can take turns running the offense rather than Flagg always looking to Irving to run the show, and Kyrie's comfort combined with his fit with Flagg shows why Dallas should keep him.

Kyrie Irving is happy in Dallas, and the Mavericks should keep it that way.
