Kyrie Irving's Klay Thompson admission proves he's a dream come true for Mavericks
By Noah Weber
The start of the 2024-25 regular season for the Dallas Mavericks is just over 72 hours away, and fans can't wait to see how the team looks after a busy offseason of retooling the roster around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Doncic missing the entire preseason due to a calf contusion was one of the bigger stories coming out of training camp for Dallas, and despite him missing all of preseason, he has been practicing for the past few sessions and it seems like he is trending towards playing on Thursday night against the San Antonio Spurs.
Irving held down the fort while Doncic was gone and looked excellent in both games he played in, and fans got a look at what he and Klay Thompson look like when they share the floor. Thompson's preseason was filled with high and low moments as he struggled some from the field but also had a few hot shooting stretches, and a recent quote from Irving shows why he was the perfect pickup for Dallas.
Thompson's personality will make him a perfect fit in Dallas
Chemistry and bonding among the Mavs players helped take them all the way to the NBA Finals last year and enjoying the company of those who you go to work with every day is important. Thompson dove headfirst into this new journey with the Mavs by taking his new teammates on a boat trip in California, and his off-court impact and impact as a teammate could end up being just as big as his impact on the court.
"He just stays to himself, loves his family, loves what he does for a living, loves helping out people, loves traveling," Irving said of Thompson on Monday. "He’s just an overall good person. It's a luxury that we don't take for granted having that type of guy and that type of personality in our locker room."
Irving was one of the biggest recruiters in helping get Thompson to Dallas, and it's clear every time that he is asked about him that he thinks highly of him as a player, but also as a person. Irving's relationships with his teammates and leadership on and off the floor are some of the many highlights of his time with Dallas so far, and Thompson seems like he is going to fit in perfectly when hearing about the type of person that he is from someone who knows him well in Irving.
Players who succeed the most in Dallas are ones who don't bring a huge ego and who buy into their role, and from what Irving said, it sounds like Thompson's personality sets him apart. The Mavericks pride themselves on bringing in these types of players, and Thompson's leadership should not be undermined heading into this season.
Thompson seems like an all-around great person from everything that his teammates and coaches have said about him over the last month or so, and this is laying the framework for a great season for him in Dallas. Those who are successful in Dallas for multiple seasons all typically share this type of personality and demeanor, and all of the on-court success will be a cherry on top.
