Klay Thompson's time with the Dallas Mavericks has gone from believing he's the team's missing piece to making the NBA Finals to tanking, and his frustrations boiled over earlier this week. In a game against the LA Clippers, which Dallas lost, a clip went viral of Thompson looking extremely frustrated on the bench during a stoppage in the second half.
Thompson was stomping his feet, shaking his head, and briefly put his towel over his face. It remains unclear exactly what he was upset about, but no one on that roster is happy with the way that they're playing. Dallas is 6-29 in their last 35 games, and while this definitely helps their odds of landing a favorable pick in the lottery, it's especially frustrating for 13-year veterans like Thompson.
This isn't what Thompson signed up for in Dallas
This isn't what he signed up for when he agreed to leave the Golden State Warriors and sign a three-year deal with the Mavericks, and his regret for switching teams at this point in his career may be growing.
When Thompson decided to join the Mavericks, they were fresh off a trip to the NBA Finals. Dallas lost this series 4-1 to the Boston Celtics, and one of their biggest problems was 3-point shooting from their role players.
The Mavericks needed more shooting around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving badly, and Thompson was supposed to fill that role. He declined a much bigger contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers to join the Mavs and play with Doncic and Irving, but two years later, he may be wishing he had signed elsewhere.
His future with the Mavericks suddenly feels uncertain
Dallas has missed the playoffs in both of Thompson's first two seasons with the team, and their record this season will finish as the second-worst Mavericks season in the 21st century. 25 wins (assuming they lose their final two games) in a season that was supposed to be a bounce-back season is inexcusable, and Thompson can only watch as his dreams of winning his fifth ring in Dallas fizzle out.
Some rumors emerged ahead of the trade deadline this season that Thompson wanted to play for a contender, and while he ultimately didn't get traded and said he was happy with how things were going in Dallas, this may not be the case ahead of his final year under contract. He told the San Antonio Spurs' bench that the Mavs were tanking back in February amid a strong scoring stretch, and fans feel extremely bad for him.
Despite the adversity that he's faced, he's never complained and has been a true professional through it all. He accepted his first permanent move to the bench, and he has always put the team first during his entire stint with the Mavericks.
Thompson just wants to win, and unfortunately, Dallas hasn't allowed him to do that. This offseason will be very interesting for his future with the Mavericks, as they could elect to move on to give him a better shot at winning a title.
He still has the 3-point shot-making to make an impact somewhere, and even though the Mavericks are poised to be better next season, he can't hide his frustration with how poorly this season has gone.
