While Klay Thompson's name has been etched in trade rumors for the Dallas Mavericks over the past few weeks, a different type of drama recently unfolded with Thompson and former teammate Kevin Durant online, and Thompson clapped back at Durant after some shady comments by Durant. Thompson is justified in doing so, considering he helped Durant win two championships with the Golden State Warriors.
Durant made a comment on Instagram regarding a post comparing the former Warriors' super-team to the newly formed super team by the Philadelphia 76ers, with Durant proclaiming the Warriors team was worse by far, citing that players like Thompson and Draymond Green don't have the same resume as the players Philadelphia has.
Thompson clapped back at Durant's slight quickly
Durant's take wasn't out of line by itself, but in the post, he made specific reference to Thompson by saying he only averaged 22 points per game and was never an MVP candidate in any capacity, which was an unneeded slight at Thompson while making this take. Thompson responded to Durant by tagging him and asking what the need was to use his government name, as he clearly didn't take kindly to the comment.
KD: “Klay Thompson, never a MVP in nothing, 22 PPG.”

There's obviously a chance Thompson gets traded by Dallas this offseason, but it's hard to imagine it would be to the Houston Rockets at this point, as they are not only a division rival, but also the same team Durant currently plays on. There's no doubt Thompson and Durant fostered a special bond on those Warriors teams that won multiple championships and made three finals appearances together, which makes this comment from Durant even more out of left field.
Sure, Durant has notoriously had "Twitter fingers" more so than practically any superstar in the modern NBA, and fans can appreciate the fact that he's always willing to speak his mind on certain NBA topics, but it's quite the low blow to make such a direct slight at Thompson considering their history together.
This could provide extra cinema to Mavs-Rockets games next season
Anytime the Mavericks and Rockets play each other, there's already some added juice in the building from a rivalry standpoint, but now there could be another dynamic at play with Thompson and Durant going at each other.
This is taking into account that Thompson sticks around for the start of the season in Dallas, of course, but if he does, there's almost no doubt that he and Durant could end up chirping at each other during the game, especially since Durant is one of the most acclaimed trash talkers in modern NBA history.
Thompson is never one to back down from a challenge either, and has had his fair share of trash-talking moments in his career as well, so this little offseason exchange is definitely something to keep in mind for when Dallas takes on the Rockets for the first time next season, as it could make for some very fun and competitive basketball and antics.
