Jason Kidd's viral Mavericks admission to LeBron James is not as it seems

Over three months after the Dallas Mavericks parted ways with Jason Kidd, the former Dallas head coach and 2011 NBA champion went viral. The buzz and news surrounding Kidd have been quiet for the last few months, as he has not taken another job coaching yet, but all of that changed on Monday.

Jason Kidd thinks the Mavs got lucky?!

Kidd sat down with ALL-STAR Magazine for an exclusive interview that was published last week, but he didn't go viral until yesterday. Aggregators were able to get their hands on this video, and many Mavericks fans weren't happy with what he had to say about the 2011 NBA Finals to LeBron James.

Dallas defeated James and the Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals, the franchise's only NBA championship, but in this interview, Kidd said that if James ever brings up this series, Kidd agrees with him that the Mavericks got lucky. This was in response to a question about whether Kidd teased James about the Finals while he was an assistant coach for the Lakers and James was on the team.

"He would bring it up," Kidd said. "I would let him bring it up."

The interviewer then asked Kidd what James would say about it.

"Uh, that we got lucky," Kidd responded. "And I just say I agree with him."

This quote is not as it seems

On the surface, this quote seems like a nightmare. The Mavericks' 2011 NBA Finals win was one of the best playoff runs in NBA history, and it's something that Dallas fans hold extremely close to their heart.

The fact that a former head coach of the team and longtime player would say such a thing certainly seems unimaginable, especially when just reading the quote, but the Hall-of-Fame point guard was clearly joking with the interviewer. They shared a laugh afterward, and as many Mavs fans realized during his time as head coach, Kidd has an extremely dry sense of humor.

He would often joke around during postgame press conferences during his time as head coach, and while some of his jokes were hard to catch on to, he did use sarcasm often. Kidd's tone and seriousness while answering questions sometimes left fans confused by what he ultimately meant and whether he was joking, but if you're around him enough, you learn that he jokes around and pokes fun during these press conferences.

This quote about the 2011 NBA Finals is no different, and the uproar from fans about this is not needed.

While reading the quote alone would be frustrating for these fans, it's easy to see what Kidd was going for when watching the video. Kidd was not trying to downplay the Mavs' win over James and the Heat in 2011, and while Mavs fans may still be frustrated about some of the things he did during the end of his time in Dallas, this shouldn't be another thing for them to be angry about.
