When the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis on February 1, just before midnight, fans knew that the effects of this shocking move were going to be seemingly endless. Dallas had just traded a superstar player that the city absolutely adored before he hit his prime, and the negative consequences from this move hit Nico Harrison and the Mavericks nonstop for months.
From fans canceling their season tickets to "fire Nico" chants anywhere and everywhere in DFW to missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons (largely due to Kyrie Irving tearing his ACL, though) and more, the Mavs couldn't catch a break after trading Doncic. These bad breaks may just keep on coming, too, as Mavs head coach Jason Kidd is a coveted candidate that the New York Knicks have real interest in for their head coaching vacancy after they fired Tom Thibodeau earlier this week.
The Knicks just happen to offer Kidd a great situation, as he would get to rejoin Jalen Brunson and his good friend Casey Smith on staff and inherit a great roster that just made the Eastern Conference Finals, and while it seems unlikely Kidd would leave the Mavericks at this juncture, the Doncic trade could have directly caused his departure if he does decide to leave.
Luka Doncic trade fallout may drive Jason Kidd out of Dallas
According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the Mavericks have made some decisions over the years that Kidd was not on board with, and the Mavs not being aligned with their head coach, who had a Hall-of-Fame playing career for the franchise and helped bring them their only NBA Championship alongside Dirk Nowitzki, could lead him to consider this position in New York.
"I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I know or even think that J-Kidd wants out of Dallas," MacMahon reported. "That would be going way too far. What I can comfortably say is there certainly have been decisions, major franchise decisions that have been made, that he was not on board with."
One of the decisions Kidd did not support was the firing of longtime athletic trainer Smith, and of course, now he just led the Knicks to one of their healthiest seasons ever as New York's vice president of sports medicine. Smith's firing alienated Doncic, as he was extremely close to him, and of course, the trade later happened.
Harrison strategically got rid of several different members of the Mavericks' staff with whom Doncic was close before trading him, and among the people who weren't happy about the trade is Kidd. While Kidd did have some concerns about Doncic, he was not in support of Harrison's decision to trade him like they did, and these organizational changes that Kidd has disapproved of could lead him to go take Thibodeau's ex-job with the Knicks.
By no means did MacMahon ever say that he thinks Kidd is going to leave the Mavericks, but it was clear after the trade that he was frustrated with everything that had happened. He even missed a postgame press conference due to the frustration that he was dealing with after the fallout of the Doncic trade, and this cursed trade leading to Kidd heading to New York would be the final knockout punch every Mavericks fan hopes doesn't happen.
