Mavericks risk deepening the disaster by rushing fan-driven trade plan

The Mavericks can't afford to make this trade mistake at such a desperate time after firing Nico Harrison.

History was made on Tuesday morning when the Dallas Mavericks terminated Nico Harrison and thus concluded that the Luka Doncic trade was a complete disaster from top to bottom. Not only was Harrison's firing a complete disaster class from the sense that one of the reasons the Mavs decided to go a different direction was due to home games being harder to play in due to the sheer amount of "Fire Nico" chants, but Patrick Dumont seemed to officially conclude that trading Doncic was a mistake.

While there has been plenty of buzz surrounding the Mavericks and Harrison, no noise has been louder than that of what direction the Mavericks should head in during the post-Harrison era. Should the Mavericks continue to fight for wins and build around an aging core of veterans, or should they lean into the Cooper Flagg-led era of young players and start the rebuild as soon as possible to try and milk out every last ounce of value from Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson?

There's no doubt that the noise surrounding the Mavericks has been in favor of selling the roster and beginning the rebuilding process with Flagg at the forefront as soon as possible, but that may not be the wisest decision the team could make in such a dire time. With the Mavericks still in search of a full-time general manager, fans may not get the full answer they are seeking right away, and that could work out for the best, no matter how rough Dallas' situation on the floor may be.

Mavericks must pause all trade talks until GM search ends

There's no doubt that the product on the floor has not met the expectations of an entire fanbase breathing down the neck of a front office, which may be the biggest reason Harrison was fired with so much time left in the regular season. While the product has left a bad taste in just about everyone's mouth, the Mavericks can't afford to make another costly mistake and just sell players to begin the rebuilding process as soon as possible.

Not only would the Mavericks be feeding more into Harrison's ideology of do whatever it takes to get your way, but the team would not be starting the rebuilding process the right way by not extracting the maximum amount of value possible from the roster. Davis, in particular, has been a name that fans have already chartered to be sold on the trade market, and while his time in Dallas hasn't been of note, the Mavericks could easily get more value by allowing Davis to play and prove that he can still stay healthy enough for an extended period to make an impact on a roster looking to make that championship leap.

Allowing the Mavericks to make a thorough general manager hire and not just throwing a name in the pot to stop the bleeding should be priority number one and two for this franchise in the coming days. From there, fans should not only have a better course of action on what the team could look like in a few months from now, but it would give the Mavericks a clear voice that they need to abide by before jumping the gun and making even more trades that the team would regret down the line.

The Mavericks could have perhaps the most important next few days in franchise history to not only ensure that the Flagg era is in safe hands, but that the team can dig itself out of the crater that Harrison dug them in. The Mavericks can't afford to make any rash decisions and must approach every possibility with thought and multiple voices backing whatever decision is meant to be made final.
