6 Mavericks players who have no room for error in Jason Kidd's rotation
By Noah Weber
1. Jaden Hardy
Even after signing his three-year, $18 million extension earlier this week, Jaden Hardy is someone who needs to make the most of his minutes to ensure that he remains a part of Jason Kidd's rotations. We've seen Hardy fall out of the rotation in years past, and he'll have to display some consistency early on to prove to Kidd that he belongs in the regular rotation.
Hardy enters the regular season after an excellent couple of games in the preseason, and he has been far more impressive than Spencer Dinwiddie has to start this year.
In order for Hardy to become a trusted player in Kidd's rotation, he must display good decision-making and poise when he's in the game. No one is going to be able to provide the same impact and reliability that Dante Exum does when leading the offense, but Hardy being able to hold down the fort while Exum is out would be huge. Hardy isn't a true point guard like Exum is, but his guard skills have significantly improved as of late.
His decision-making when getting downhill looks much better, and his willingness and accuracy as a lob passer improve by the day. If he can continue to gain chemistry with Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gaford while also showing the ability to make quick reads, he'll be golden.
If he struggles early on and can't provide a spark in his minutes, Kidd could look elsewhere. Everyone knows Hardy can score at will and light it up from downtown, but doing the little things is going to be important for him moving forward.
