Dallas Mavericks basketball is finally here, with the team now two games into the preseason. While the regular season doesn't start for another week and a half, the Mavericks are currently playing through training camp and their first few preseason affairs to truly get a feel for their roster before games start to really matter.
Through two preseason games, there have been plenty of narratives that have stuck out like sore thumbs, including Cooper Flagg's emergence and impact on the team's performance just a week into the season. With Flagg on everyone's radar, there have been a few of the Mavericks' young players who have flown under the watchful eyes of fans, and that included University of Memphis product Moussa Cisse.
Entering training camp, many fans didn't have hope for Cisse, who signed a training camp deal after a disappointing few Summer League outings. Although Cisse's performances on the floor in Las Vegas did not meet the expectations of fans, through two preseason games, it's already clear that he deserves Dallas' final two-way roster spot.
Mavs may have solved their final roster question early in training camp
With the NBA season quickly approaching, the Mavericks still have one two-way roster spot open with just over a week before the season tips off. While the Mavericks have historically left one or even two roster spots open heading into training camp, the Mavericks appear to be pushing all of their chips in with Cisse earning the team's final two-way spot.
Entering the league, Cisse was known as an athletic rim protector with an offensive upside that would take a few years to truly unlock. There is no doubt that Cisse's name dropped as he struggled during the Mavericks' Summer League matchups, but he has clearly bounced back after two impressive performances during the Mavericks' two preseason games.
In the Mavericks' first preseason game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cisse truly revealed his talent with stable guard play around him, as he snagged multiple rebounds and showcased his touch around the rim. In just his second game against the Charlotte Hornets, he showed off his defensive potential with a massive block on the defensive end of the floor.
To make matters even better for Cisse, he is the only Maverick that is currently eligible to sign a two-way roster spot, considering this is just his rookie season, and all other Mavs under a training camp contract have been in the league for four years or longer. With that being said, from the start, it almost appears that the Mavericks are fully betting on Cisse to earn the team's final roster spot (unless they sign a player from elsewhere) .
The Mavericks still have two preseason games yet to play, where it will be likely that Cisse and other Mavericks who have yet to get legit minutes in the team's rotation will have more time on the floor, but it's already looking like he may have that final roster spot in the bag.
Dallas still has a few roster moves to settle, including the reality that Dante Exum's injury history may be too deep for the Mavericks to rely on, but there is no doubt that Cisse is well on his way to being on the Mavericks' opening night roster.
