Mavericks must wave the white flag on inexcusable trade blunder

One Dallas Mavericks player who has been a disaster all season is Caleb Martin, and it's time for the team to wave the white flag on his roster spot and trade him as soon as they can.

Last season, Martin did very little to contribute to the Mavericks' season after being traded by the Philadelphia 76ers for Quentin Grimes. After his brutal 14 games last season in Dallas, Martin needed a big season to show he's capable of being a quality player off the bench for the Mavs.

However, it's been anything but a strong season for Martin. Given Martin's poor performance this season, keeping him around has been a major mistake by Dallas. Now, it's time for the Mavericks to end Martin's journey with the team by including him in a trade ahead of the February 5 deadline.

Mavericks need to take the L on Caleb Martin and cut ties immediately

Through 18 games this season, Martin has turned into arguably the biggest liability on the Mavericks' roster and one of the worst contracts in the entire NBA. Martin has averaged a woeful 1.3 points per game while averaging less than 10 minutes per game under head coach Jason Kidd.

Along with averaging 1.3 points per game, Martin's rebounds, assists, field goal percentage, 3-point shooting, blocks, and steals per game this season are worse than last season.

It's clear that Kidd can't trust Martin enough to play him because of his inability to shoot with confidence. Every game that Martin has played this season has been off the bench. Martin needed to fix his jump shot before the season started to try and get more minutes, but his jumper looks even worse than before.

Martin is shooting under 26 percent from the floor overall and 10 percent from three. Considering Martin is a career 35 percent 3-point shooter, it shows how he can't be with Dallas anymore. He's in desperate need of a fresh start, and with the Mavericks already struggling with shooting as a team, he continuously brings them down in that area.

In a stat that might sound shocking, of the 14 games Martin played in November, he didn't score in nine of the games. Martin's final November game this past Saturday against the LA Clippers was his worst shooting performance of the season when he shot 0-5 from the floor overall and missed two 3-pointers in a season-high 21 minutes.

Kidd is giving Martin every chance to make an impact, but he is failing time and time again. Dallas can't afford to play him real minutes due to his descending offensive game, regardless of how strong his defense is.

The decision to keep Martin falls once again on Nico Harrison. It has proven to be another failed trade by Harrison, and it shows why he's no longer the general manager of the Mavericks.

He decided to bet on defense over offense by trading Grimes for Martin, and it has turned into a nightmare. Grimes is dominating for the Sixers while Martin looks unplayable, and this decision by Harrison is one of his many moves that set the franchise back for years to come.

Martin was in some trade predictions this past October. Now, the reality of Martin being traded could happen if the Mavericks try and move on from him. The perfect chance for the Mavericks to try and finally get rid of Martin would be to include him as a salary filler in a different trade, as no team from across the league will want to take on his contract.
