Mavericks must rescue Cooper Flagg's rookie year by making this trade

The Mavericks' season is spiraling out of control, and they may be forced to make a trade sooner rather than later.

A lot of excitement surrounded the Dallas Mavericks entering this season due to Cooper Flagg joining the squad as the No. 1 overall pick. Fans were hyped once again after they won the lottery, and it seemed like they had a great shot to get back on track.

However, this season has been a disappointing one. The Mavericks are at the bottom of the Western Conference in Flagg's rookie season, with the offense being brutal. With the Los Angeles Lakers thriving with Luka Doncic while LeBron James is injured, the Doncic trade continues to look worse for Dallas.

With their struggles this season, the Mavericks are in danger of finishing near the bottom of the NBA if they can't get things rolling. Finishing in the bottom would suck all the energy out of Dallas with Flagg as a rookie, but there's one trade target the Mavericks could trade for on the Miami Heat that could save the season before things get out of hand, according to Bleacher Report.

Tyler Herro would be a game-changer in Dallas

Recently, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report wrote an article titled "5 Dallas Mavericks Trade Targets to Save Cooper Flagg's Rookie NBA Season." The first player that Favale mentioned in his article was the Heat's Tyler Herro.

"Dallas doesn't have to worry about Herro's potential redundancies alongside a healthy Kyrie Irving," Favale said about Herro. "He is better suited as the secondary creator and has placed in the 75th percentile or better of spot-up three-point efficiency through four of his six seasons, per BBall Index."

Herro hasn't played this season, as he is currently recovering from a foot and ankle injury. Even with Herro hurt to start the season, there is reason for the Mavericks to trade for the 25-year-old.

The Mavericks need better shooting from three as they are at the bottom of the NBA. Without Irving and Klay Thompson struggling, the Mavericks need somebody to drill open 3-pointers.

That is where Herro comes in.

Herro is a 38 percent career 3-point shooter. Herro can create his own shot, and this is something the Mavericks have been lacking this season without Irving. Herro can also rebound decently well and dish out assists as a secondary ball handler.

Along with being a solid 3-point shooter, Herro's overall talent has been evident in Miami, and the accolades and numbers show it. Herro made the 2020 All-Rookie Team and won the 2022 Sixth Man of the Year. Over the past four seasons, Herro has averaged at least 20 points per game, showing that he can be a reliable scorer year over year.

Last season, Herro recorded the best season of his career. Herro was named to his first All-Star Game while averaging a career-high 23.9 points per game. Herro also has deep playoff experience with having played in the NBA Finals twice and three Eastern Conference Finals.

Trading away Thompson may need to be an option for the Mavericks due to his awful season. Thompson has already been in some trade rumors, so the Mavericks could use Thompson to trade for Herro, along with more players and potentially some draft capital if they feel strongly about his future.

Herro would be an excellent building block to add to Dallas' core alongside Flagg, Dereck Lively II, Max Christie, and P.J. Washington, and Nico Harrison should definitely consider giving the Heat a call before the trade deadline.
