The Dallas Mavericks struck gold when they drafted Cooper Flagg. He's already looking like the best rookie in the NBA by a long shot, and the Mavs have found their next superstar for the next 10 years at the absolute least.
But what casual fans don't realize is that the two other rookies that Dallas added next to Flagg are what make their rookie class special. Flagg, on his own, is a great piece and a top-notch building block. But when adding Moussa Cisse and Ryan Nembhard into that mix, the Mavericks have a solid young core to build around as they enter a new era.
Some teams around the league have strong rookie duos, but the Mavericks boast the strongest first-year trio. They have two stars in the making with Flagg and Nembhard, and Cisse's energy and defense off the bench is the cherry on top.
Dallas signed Nembhard and Cisse as undrafted rookies after the conclusion of the 2025 NBA Draft, but it's clear that both of them should've been drafted. Nembhard nabbed the Mavs' starting point guard spot at the end of last month, and he hasn't slowed down since.
Mavericks built the most promising 2025 draft class
As a starter, Nembhard is averaging 12.9 points and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 54.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Mavericks' starting point guard spot went from a dark hole to a beam of light, and that's largely been due to Nembhard's rise into one of the best rookie guards in the NBA.
His ability as a pure playmaker has helped elevate Flagg's skill set, and the two look like they're going to dominate the league together for years to come. Flagg has benefited tremendously from having a true point guard share the floor with him, and Nembhard has taken a heavy weight off of his shoulders.
With Cisse, his rise hasn't been as steady due to him receiving sporadic minutes, but Dallas has a hidden gem with him as well.
He is averaging 1.1 blocks per game, which is second among NBA rookies, and his ability to protect the rim and run in transition are special. He alters almost any shot that an opponent shoots at the rim with his 7-foot-5 wingspan and freak athleticism, and the Mavs have the perfect replacement for Dwight Powell if they decide to move on from him after this season.
He brings great energy, just like Powell, and many of the things that he does don't come up on the stat sheet. No one hustles as hard as him, and his five offensive rebounds against the Utah Jazz on Monday reflect that.
He did that in just 13 minutes of action, and only one player on both teams combined grabbed more than two offensive rebounds. Cisse is an energizer bunny who looks like he can be a steady role player off the Mavs' bench moving forward.
Dallas' rookie trio of Flagg, Nembhard, and Cisse gives them balance, versatility, and promise, and no other team in the NBA has a rookie class that is this talented. This group brings everything that you need from a future roster-building perspective, and the fact that they each play a different position shows how well Dallas' front office did in the draft.
Flagg, of course, is the name that's going to sell tickets, and he has proven that he has what it takes to be a franchise cornerstone. His competitiveness, combined with his incredible defense and growing offensive game have stamped his name down as one of the best young players in the NBA, and Dallas is going to be dangerous for as long as he is on the roster.
He won't be alone in these efforts, though, as Cisse and Nembhard are special as well. No other team has three rookies who are already this impactful, and Dallas hoops are in good hands with these three youngsters.
