Mavericks' former sharpshooter without a job clearly deserves to be signed

One of the league's most underrated shooters is somehow still a free agent, and it just happens to be a former Maverick.

After nearly three weeks of free agency, the Dallas Mavericks seem to have their 15-man roster in order, as they signed D'Angelo Russell and Dante Exum to contracts to solidify their backcourt. Dallas will be forced to make some sort of trade or roster move before the season to make room for Exum, as they currently have 16 players signed to standard deals, and free agency seems to be slowing down everywhere else in the league as well.

One former Maverick who remains unsigned this offseason is Seth Curry, and while it wouldn't make sense for Dallas to sign him (since their roster is overfilled already), some team in the NBA should take a chance on Curry and sign him as soon as they can.

Mavericks fans know how dangerous Curry can be when he is at his best, as he has shot 43 percent from three over three separate stints in Dallas, and a team should sign him if they need a flamethrower off the bench.

Seth Curry is somehow still available and teams are making a mistake

If Dallas did have an open roster spot, it would make a ton of sense to bring him in since they need dynamic shooters alongside their bigs, but since they don't, the Mavericks may get stuck with playing him a couple of times a year. It also remains questionable if Curry would even want to return to the Mavericks, as he has been traded by them two separate times, and it would make more sense for him to find a new home.

Last season for the Charlotte Hornets, Curry averaged 6.5 points per game in 68 games while shooting a career-high 45.6 percent from three, proving that he deserves a roster spot somewhere. The Mavericks had to give up on Curry in the middle of the 2023-24 season when they traded for P.J. Washington, and he has remained in Charlotte ever since.

Now, as a 34-year-old free agent, this summer may be one of Curry's final chances to secure a contract, and some team with a need for backcourt depth should bring him in. His ability to play either guard spot, light it up from three, and score from the mid-range can't be undermined, even at this point in his career, and he'd be a valuable veteran for any team to have on their bench. With Charlotte looking to improve their character within the locker room this offseason, Curry would have been a great player to consider keeping around, as he would have helped them on and off the floor.

Every team needs more shooting in today's NBA, and the fact that he is still on the open market is unfathomable, especially considering how he shot the ball last season for the Hornets. It seems like there are more and more strong NBA role players every year who remain unsigned, even late in the offseason, and it shows how much more competitive the NBA is getting every year.

Mavericks fans know this well, as Dennis Smith Jr. was out of the NBA last season, and fans wanted him badly, but he ultimately didn't end up signing with any team. Fans could end up going through this cycle again this year with Curry, especially if no one picks him up this offseason and Dallas needs guard depth at some point during the season, but regardless, Curry deserves a standard contract somewhere.
