Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont recently reached out to Dirk Nowitzki in an effort to heal his relationship with the franchise, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon. Nowitzki's relationship went sour over the last few years, especially after the Luka Doncic trade, but Dumont is looking to get things moving in the right direction once again.

Nowitzki is known as the greatest Maverick of all time and one of the most beloved athletes the city of Dallas has ever had, and the last few years haven't been the same without him. He used to be a familiar face at Mavs home games and around the franchise, but he has been extremely distant as of late.

Nowitzki was seen sitting in a suite for a game earlier this season between the Mavericks and the Houston Rockets, which is a great sign, and Dumont seems to understand how much Nowitzki means to Mavericks fans. Him attending this game and being willing to be seen on the big screen is an "indication of Dirk starting to accept an olive branch from Patrick Dumont because the relationship between Dirk and the franchise had completely frayed," according to MacMahon.

Dumont begins to repair Mavericks' relationship with Dirk Nowitzki

Nowitzki seems extremely excited for what the future could hold with Cooper Flagg as the team's new superstar, and with Nico Harrison gone, Dumont knows that he has to get the legend involved as soon as possible.

"Patrick Dumont has reached out in an effort to begin repairing that relationship," MacMahon reported.

The last year has been an absolute whirlwind for the Mavericks, with the Luka Doncic trade changing the entire infrastructure of the team. Mavericks fans are happy to root for Flagg and a new era, but things have been completely different with Doncic gone.

Doncic being traded was the "final straw" for Nowitzki, according to MacMahon, and he wasn't a fan of Nico Harrison firing Casey Smith either. Nowitzki and Doncic are still close friends, as they spent one season playing together, and he didn't take lightly to Dallas trading him out of nowhere.

Harrison never prioritized getting Nowitzki involved as much as he should have, and Nowitzki didn't want to be involved with him in charge either.

The Mavericks were no longer anything like the organization that Nowitzki spent 21 seasons playing for, and despite still having an office at the Mavs Practice Facility, it became dormant. Nowitzki had been driven out due to the decisions that Harrison was making behind the scenes, and even after Harrison was fired, Nowitzki believed that he should have been fired way earlier.

The Mavericks made the right move by firing Harrison when they did, but there's still work to be done. Nowitzki has to be back in the fold in some form or fashion, and Dumont already seems to be moving toward that.

Making Nowitzki the team's next GM wouldn't be the great idea that some fans think it would be, but giving him a role in the front office would undoubtedly be the perfect next step. Nowitzki is "open-minded" to be part of the franchise again, and the Mavs are definitely interested in making this happen.

Patrick Dumont has the chance to get all Mavericks fans behind him after a rough beginning as the team's primary owner, and bringing in Dirk Nowitzki to join the front office would be a great start.
