Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson was on top of the world on Monday night, as he tied a Mavericks record for most 3-pointers in a quarter with seven made threes in the first quarter against the Washington Wizards, and this was undoubtedly the best moment of his Mavericks career.
He was playing with an unreal amount of confidence, and his teammates emphasized feeding him the rock early and often. This was a major change from the game that Thompson had against the Boston Celtics a few days before in which he only scored six points, and the Mavs need these big performances to continue rolling in. The hot shooting nights will continue to roll in for Thompson as long as he gets the touches and the coaching staff makes it a priority to run off-ball actions for him and keep him engaged.
After the game against the Wizards, Thompson said that assistant coach Jared Dudley told him to play aggressively and to let it fly, which shows just how underrated Dudley is to this team, but he was also asked about his interest in teaming up with Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry one final time next month.
There has been a rumored 3-point shootout planned at All-Star weekend in San Francisco including Curry, Thompson, Sabrina Ionescu, and Caitlin Clark, and Thompson made it clear that he'd be interested in participating in it if it were to happen.
Thompson and Curry's reunion falls apart before it could happen
Thompson didn't know the exact details of the event, but he thought it would be "fun." Closing his chapter with the Warriors at the Chase Center while sharing the floor with Curry would have been the perfect ending to Thompson's time in the Bay, but it doesn't sound like this event will be happening due to Clark.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Clark won't participate in the rumored 3-point contest at NBA All-Star weekend with Curry, Thompson, and Ionescu as she "wants her first three-point contest to be at WNBA All-Star in Indianapolis this summer."
NBA fans who were dreaming of seeing Curry and Thompson team up one final team as part of that 3-point contest can put that thought to bed, as Clark doesn't want to be part of it. She would rather have her debut 3-point contest be in front of her home Indiana Fever fans over the summer during the WNBA All-Star festivities, which is fair, but it doesn't change the fact that this was a wonderful idea to help build some excitement for NBA All-Star weekend in Golden State.
This WNBA-NBA shootout would have been amazing for publicity for both leagues, as the Curry-Ionescu shootout from last year drew tons of viewers, and adding Thompson and Clark into the mix would have created even more excitement. This would have had the potential to be one of the most iconic 3-point shootouts in NBA history, and this idea has to be thrown away for now.
Warriors fans who were hoping to see the Splash Brothers reunite one final time before Thompson fully turns the page and continues to focus on pursuing his fifth ring with the Mavericks will be left disappointed by this, and Thompson's next trip to Golden State will have to wait until February 23 when Dallas battles the Warriors for the final time of the regular season.
