New Dallas Mavericks star shooting guard Klay Thompson is having a better start to the 2024-25 season than anyone could have imagined.

Thompson is averaging 19.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 45.5 percent from downtown, and playing next to Luka Doncic is helping him get back to playing the way that everyone knows he can. He has looked outstanding as a shooter through his first three games, and he is getting countless open looks.

There have been multiple times this season that Thompson has had time to take a dribble before letting a three fly because of how wide-open he was, and Doncic's on-ball gravity has been a thing of beauty to watch next to Thompson.

Pairing one of the greatest passers this game has ever seen with an all-time great shooter has been special to see, and Thompson's great season is just getting started.

Record-breaking season from Thompson would secure Dallas' Finals spot

Thompson's excellent performances are catching the eye of everyone around the NBA world, and Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey dropped a hot take when it comes to his game. Bailey predicted that Thompson is going to set a career-high in 3-point percentage.

Thompson's current career-high for 3-point percentage in a season is 44 percent from the 2017-18 season, and if he can surpass that, the Mavs would be in a great spot for an NBA Finals return.

Dallas desperately needed a third scorer to step up for the team last season, and Thompson has proved that he can be that and more. While most of Thompson's game in Dallas thus far has been his 3-point shooting, his in-between game has been great as well.

Thompson's mid-range jumper off the dribble looks pure after a slow preseason in that regard, and he is taking advantage of defenders when they decide to sell out on taking away the three. His all-around scoring expertise from the mid-range and downtown has helped make him a deadly offensive weapon, and him breaking his own personal best for 3-point percentage in a season would speak volumes to how seamless of a fit he is on this team.

It took him no time to get going, as he shot 6-10 from downtown in his Mavs debut and put up 22 points, and he is getting some of the best looks of his career. If Thompson were to somehow shoot over 44 percent from three, Mavs fans would be thrilled.

Doncic is going to continue to feed him excellent looks, and he should continue to be able to cash them in at a high clip. He is already shooting above 44 percent from three over three games, and he is laying the foundation to turn this "hot take" into a reality.

Thompson shooting this efficiently from downtown for the entire season would make this Mavericks' offense unstoppable, as both Doncic and Kyrie Irving have had their moments as well. Combine that with Dereck Lively II's scoring off the bench, and the Mavs should be golden.

Dallas' overall bench scoring does need to improve to reach their full potential, but Jason Kidd is stressing that everyone needs to remain "patient" when it comes to Quentin Grimes and Naji Marshall's fit. Kidd referenced how it took time for Irving to fully fit, and he was excellent once he hit his stride in his first full season with the Mavs.

There has been no patience required when it comes to Thompson's fit on the Mavs as he has hit the ground running, and fans could be watching a historic season for him unfold if he keeps up the unreal 3-point shooting numbers.
