The Dallas Mavericks' season ended earlier than anyone could have initially expected on Friday night as they fell to the Memphis Grizzlies by a score of 120-106 after an impressive win over the Sacramento Kings two nights before. This comes as a major disappointment after Dallas made the NBA Finals last season, led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and Jason Kidd didn't have either one of those players to utilize in this year's postseason.
Doncic was obviously traded to the Los Angeles Lakers back in February while Irving was out with a torn ACL, which he suffered at the beginning of March, but Kidd's new superstar, Anthony Davis, put on a show against Memphis and was one of the few bright spots for the Mavericks.
Davis finished with 40 points and nine rebounds while shooting 16-29 from the field despite hobbling up and down the floor by the end of it due to getting banged up during the game, he quietly displayed a trait of Doncic's over the last few weeks that Mavs fans will grow to cherish, regardless of how angry they still are about the trade.
Anthony Davis' mindset on injuries is strikingly similar to Luka Doncic's
Davis and Doncic are both warriors who hate missing time and battle through injuries at all times, and Davis displayed that last night in Memphis. He was clearly in serious pain throughout the game, but he continued to give his all and fight as hard as he could to give the Mavericks a chance of making the playoffs to clinch a first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Davis didn't need to return this season by any means, as people inside the organization wanted to shut him down, but he was eager to return from injury and prove something to Mavs fans, his teammates, and Nico Harrison. It would have been easy for Davis to sit for the rest of the season and prepare for next season after going down in his Mavs debut against the Houston Rockets with an adductor strain, but he did whatever he could to return and help the Mavericks make a playoff push.
The same can be said about his rehab from his abdominal injury that he was dealing with when he was traded to the Mavericks from the Los Angeles Lakers, as he ultimately rushed it to get back on the floor, which led to him getting injured again. Doncic was notorious for the same thing, as he often didn't allow his body to fully recover from injuries before returning, and he always wanted to be on the floor to help his teammates.
Doncic admitted that his recovery from the calf injury he suffered on Christmas Day was the first time that he actually allowed his body to heal rather than rushing back, and nearly every Mavs fan wishes that they could watch his excellence in a Mavs jersey one last time.
Dallas is in good hands when it comes to Davis, as he is one of the best two-way players in the NBA and is fully focused on competing for a title, and now it'll be up to Nico Harrison to put some better pieces around him and Irving. This summer will be pivotal for the Mavericks' future, and we'll have you covered with all the latest.
