The Dallas Mavericks hired Jason Kidd to be their head coach after Rick Carlisle resigned. The Hall of Fame point guard looks like the perfect fit to maximize the otherworldly potential of Luka Doncic. Kidd was a starter on the Mavs 2011 championship team, and he has a strong relationship with new general manager Nico Harrison and owner Mark Cuban.

The Mavericks have a plethora of important decisions to make this offseason. They will be looking to improve the roster around their 22-year-old superstar. Kidd also has to fill out his coaching staff. Sean Sweeney appears to be his first hire, but the Mavs are far from done.

Fans got multiple rumors on the staff, and Kidd addressed it during his introductory press conference on July 15. Here is a closer look at how it is shaping up.

Before the press conference kicked off, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reported that the Mavs are targeting Igor Kokoskov for Kidd’s staff. The former Suns head coach led the Slovenian National Team to the title at EuroBasket 2017, and he has a strong relationship with Luka Doncic.

Brad Townsend reported this from the press conference.

All three have played key roles for the Mavericks in recent years. God Shammgod has upgraded the ball-handling ability of several Mavs over the last five seasons. Peter Patton played a key role in improving the jumpers of Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, and several others. Jeremy Holsopple is a massive part of the Mavericks medical staff. Hopefully, all three will be back with the Mavs next season.

Marc Stein also reported that Lakers assistant Greg St. Jean is expected to join Kidd’s coaching staff next season. He worked in Los Angeles for the last two years. He had jobs with the Kings and Nets before joining the Lakers.

Kidd was asked about his staff during the press conference. He had this to say about bringing J.J. Barea and Tyson Chandler back to Dallas.

It will be interesting to see how Jason Kidd rounds out his staff. Kokoskov and St. Jean are fantastic additions if they get the deals done. The Mavericks need to be focused on development with their sights set on jumping into title contention immediately.

It figures to be a wild offseason for the Dallas Mavericks. Keep checking back to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest, including news, analysis, and rumors that fans will not want to miss.
