Piece the Dallas Mavericks need around Luka Doncic: 2. Rim protector/pick and roll partner

When the Mavs acquired Kristaps Porzingis in 2019, they viewed him as the perfect complement to Doncic. The Unicorn was one of the league’s best rim protectors and could shoot the lights out. The Mavericks dreamed of a 7’3 sharpshooter that erased easy buckets on the defensive end. Porzingis has shown flashes but has not consistently been that player in Dallas.

The biggest disappointment was his significant regression as a rim protector this season. LA endlessly drove at the basket with the Unicorn on the floor in the playoffs. The numbers suggest a downturn, but they may do just to quantifying KP’s lack of mobility and ability to alter shots in the paint.

If Porzingis cannot improve this offseason, the Mavericks have no player to turn to for this role. Maxi Kleber can protect the rim, but he is just a floor spacer on the offensive end. Dwight Powell is a devastating roll man, but he does not alter shots in the paint. Willie Cauley-Stein and Boban Marjanovic are best suited for limited roles.

Can the Mavs acquire a rim protector and roll man this summer? There figures to be plenty of intriguing options available.
