Dallas Mavericks: 5 reasons Luka Doncic should be considered for MVP
By Tyler Watts
Why Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic should be considered for MVP: 2. Advanced metrics
Impact matters and counting stats do not always quantify a player’s contributions on both ends of the floor. Luka has improved his defense tremendously this season, but it can go unnoticed as the stats do not pop off the screen. Some voters will look into the advanced metrics to attempt to quantify a player’s impact on the game.
Doncic always stands out there. He is eighth in Player Efficiency Rating (PER), 15th in win shares, seventh in box score plus/minus, and fourth in Value over Replacement Player (VORP). The only player ahead of him in each of those statistics that has played more games is Nikola Jokic. The combination should put Doncic in the conversation for MVP, even if the Nuggets star is the frontrunner.
The 22-year-old leads the league in usage percentage, touches, and time of possession this season. Nobody has the ball in their hands more than Luka Doncic. The Mavs are going to live and die with what their superstar can do. It often ends with incredible makes like this one that clinched the win over the Lakers on April 24.
Luka should be considered for MVP this season based on his advanced metrics, but something else will be the primary reason he is on ballots.
