Dallas Mavericks: Is Tim Hardaway Jr. a long-term answer for the Mavs?
By Tyler Watts
What will it cost for the Dallas Mavericks to re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr.?
Hardaway Jr. is making $18.975 million this season. He is the 73rd highest-paid player in the NBA by average annual value of their current contract. When he signed the deal in 2017, it was viewed as an overpay by the Knicks. They wanted to secure the restricted free agent’s services and had to hand out a hefty salary to do so. What will his market value be this summer?
If the plan is to keep Hardaway Jr. as the sixth man, it may be easier to judge his contract by deals handed out in the 2020 offseason. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell got a two-year $19 million contract from the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
Expect THJ’s deal to be more in line with Jordan Clarkson’s four-year $51.2 million pact to stay with the Utah Jazz. Clarkson is the favorite to win the award in 2021 and is three months younger than Hardaway Jr.
Tim Hardaway Jr. has been outstanding for the Mavericks, but he is going to have to accept less money to stay in Dallas. Should they re-sign him to a long-term deal this summer?
