Dallas Mavericks: Where must they improve to become title contenders?
By Tyler Watts
Do the Dallas Mavericks need another creator to become title contenders?
No team asks their star player to do more than the Mavs. Luka Doncic leads the NBA in time of possession at 9.2 minutes per game. The 22-year-old superstar is also fourth in touches, second in drives, and fourth in assists each night. The Mavericks run through Doncic and are again near the top of the league in offensive rating.
Does Dallas need to take the ball out of Luka’s hands some to become title contenders? LeBron James led the Lakers to a championship last season while being sixth in time of possession at 7.4 minutes per game. He was the first player to finish inside the top ten on a championship team since the league made the data available in 2014.
The Mavericks would benefit from taking the ball out of Luka’s hands a bit. Letting him play off the ball and finding ways to create easy buckets for their superstar would be a massive boost on an already elite offense.
Fans have seen Doncic more locked in on the defensive end this season, but that could improve further if the 22-year-old does not have to expend so much energy on the offensive end creating.
Adding another player capable of handling the ball and making plays would do wonders for the Dallas Mavericks and Luka Doncic.
