Takeaway from Dallas Mavericks win over Pacers: 3. Burke provides needed scoring
The Mavs needed someone to step up and help Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis with the scoring load. It was a team effort on Wednesday night, but Trey Burke was special. He had his jumper locked in versus the Pacers.
Burke finished with 22 points, one rebound, two assists, and two steals in 29 minutes of action. He went nine of 15 from the field and nailed four 3-pointers. The Mavericks outscored Indiana by nine points with Burke on the floor on Jan. 20.
Dallas needs someone to fill that sixth man role this season. They are emphasizing defense and will have no trouble scoring when Luka is on the floor. KP can get buckets, but the Mavs need a shot creator and scorer playing off him with the second unit. Trey Burke is more than capable of filling that role on a nightly basis.
Expect the Mavericks to do it by committee. Some night it might be Jalen Brunson handling that role. JB had a strong game in a spot start versus the Pacers. Tim Hardaway Jr. is also suited to handle that shot creation role. The Mavs need it. Keep an eye on who is filling it when the Dallas Mavericks get healthy.
