Dallas Mavericks: 5 players who need more playing time

Dallas Mavericks player who needs more playing time: 5. James Johnson
The Mavs traded for James Johnson this offseason. Some viewed the deal as Dallas adding an enforcer while creating future cap space. Johnson had a strong close to last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves (they were not invited to the bubble, so he had not played in nine months). Most expected him to play a small role and bring a veteran presence to the locker room.
Through seven games, the 6’7 forward has been one of the team’s best playmakers and defenders. He averages 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals in 15.7 minutes per game. He has the highest per-minute steal rate on the Mavericks and ranks fourth in assists behind Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson, and Tyrell Terry.
The Mavericks have emphasized improving their defense this season. Johnson gives them another big strong player that can defend on the perimeter. The 33-year-old adds toughness, leadership, and energy to the lineup too.
Dallas needs secondary playmakers around Doncic. Johnson finds open teammates and adds some flair to the offense. His playmaking ability has been a pleasant surprise in the limited sample.
James Johnson is playing just over 15 minutes per game, but do not be surprised to see that number continue to rise. The veteran has earned a 20 to 25 minute per game role. The Dallas Mavericks’ depth is the only thing keeping that from being a reality.
