Dallas Mavericks: What to watch for on Christmas Day vs. Lakers

The Dallas Mavericks had a slow start to the season opener against the Suns. Luka Doncic dropped 32 points, but could not get it going from downtown as Phoenix picked up the 106-102 victory on their home floor.

The Mavs will be looking to bounce back on Christmas Day against the Los Angeles Lakers. Dallas drew the defending champions in the primetime game on arguably the league’s marquee regular-season date. It is a showdown between LeBron James and Doncic. Two of the league’s best players will put it all on display in front of the national audience.

Here is a look at how and watch to watch for in Friday’s game between the Mavs and Lakers.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers injury updates

The Mavericks will be without Kristaps Porzingis on Christmas Day. The 7’3 big man showed off his progress including dunking in practice. It may not be long before fans see the Unicorn back on the floor, but it won’t be on the holiday. He is the only Maverick on the NBA’s official injury report.

The Lakers have listed LeBron James (ankle) and Anthony Davis (calf) as probable. Expect both stars to play on Christmas day, but be sure to check Twitter closer to tipoff for all the latest on the injuries.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers storyline to follow: Luka vs. LeBron

Doncic is the favorite to win MVP this season, but King James will have something to say about that. The four-time Most Valuable Player is fresh off winning his fourth ring. The Lakers lost their opener to the Clippers despite 22 points, five rebounds, and five assists from LeBron. Do not be fooled, though. King James and company are still favored to win the title this season.

Luka had an off night in the opener but still managed to have 32 points, eight rebounds, and five assists against the Suns. The 21-year-old star averaged 25.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 9.8 assists against the Lakers last season, but shot just 41.8 percent from the field over the small four-game sample. Expect Luka to have it locked in on Christmas Day against his idol.

Dallas Mavericks fans will not want to miss the Dec. 25 game against the Lakers. Get the plans out of the way early, so you can enjoy the game. Check back to The Smoking Cuban after the final buzzer for more.
