Dallas Mavericks: Luka Doncic predicted to win MVP by ESPN experts
Dallas Mavericks GOAT Dirk Nowitzki won the MVP award in 2007. He is the only player in team history to win the league’s highest individual honor. Last season, Luka Doncic became the second Maverick to be named first-team All-NBA. Dirk did it four times, but the 21-year-old is set to make a run at both marks.
Everyone is expecting Doncic to take another leap this season. He averaged 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game in his second year in the NBA. Could Luka produce a 30-point triple-double per game? Can he lead the Mavericks into the top four in a deep Western Conference? Never bet against Doncic.
On the eve of the 2020-2021 season, ESPN’s experts predicted which team would win the title and all the major awards (subscription required). Let us take a look at how Doncic fared in the MVP race.
Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic predicted to win MVP by ESPN experts
ESPN surveyed 15 experts on which player would win the 2021 MVP. Luka received seven votes including one from Tim MacMahon. Anthony Davis earned five votes with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard receiving three combined.
This could matter in the race. Doncic being perceived as the favorite could boost his vote total, assuming he puts up incredible numbers and the Mavericks take the next step. ESPN experts also showed that there could be some voter fatigue in selecting Giannis. The Greek Freak only received two votes, despite winning MVP two straight years.
Luka Doncic appears to be in the driver’s seat to win MVP, but he will have to prove it on the court. Expect the 21-year-old superstar to lead the Dallas Mavericks on one of the most exciting campaigns in franchise history. For more on why Luka Doncic will win MVP this season, click here.
