Dallas Mavericks: Giannis Antetokounmpo re-signs with Bucks: Who could Mavs target in 2021?
The Dallas Mavericks have been saving up cap space to make a run at a third star in the 2021 offseason. They even traded away Delon Wright for James Johnson to create more just a few weeks ago. There were plenty of marquee names set to be available, but the Mavs top target came off the board on Tuesday.
Giannis Antetokounmpo announced via Instagram that he is signing a five-year supermax extension to stay in Milwaukee. It is the smart move for the two-time MVP. Look at Anthony Davis and countless other superstars. Giannis maximizes his earning potential and can still be traded out of Milwaukee if he desires to be at some point over the next five years.
It was a crushing blow for Dallas Mavericks fans, though. They were dreaming of signing the Greek Freak next offseason and being the title favorite for at least the next half-decade. Those hopes are gone with Antetokounmpo off the board, but the Mavericks still have cap space.
With Giannis Antetokounmpo off the board: Who could the Dallas Mavericks target?
Giannis is not the only big name to come off the board recently. Paul George signed an extension with the LA Clippers, but there are still multiple targets for the Mavericks. Kawhi Leonard, Rudy Gobert, Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, and LaMarcus Aldridge could all be available. The Mavs are most likely to fill their cap space with multiple role players or via trade.
Their new top target is Bradley Beal. The Wizards guard’s two-year extension begins after this season. The 2021 offseason could be the time Washington decides to move Beal. The Mavericks will be ready with an offer if the two-time All-Star becomes available.
Dallas Mavericks fans had their dreams of signing Giannis Antetokounmpo dashed as he inked a supermax extension with the Bucks on Tuesday, but they still have space to improve their roster next offseason. Expect Donnie Nelson and company to find a way to make the Mavs a legit title contender. Fans will not want to miss it.
