Dallas Mavericks: James Johnson is dealing with a knee injury

The Dallas Mavericks traded for James Johnson this offseason. The move allowed them to ship out Delon Wright and Justin Jackson in return for Johnson. Dallas gave up two second-round picks in the three-team deal, but Johnson, who is on an expiring contract, brings the defense and toughness they need.

Fans saw what the 33-year-old veteran can do late last season with Minnesota Timberwolves. Johnson averaged 12.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks in 24.1 minutes per game over 14 contests. The 6’7 forward has a versatile skill set. He could make a massive impact coming off the bench for the Mavs this season.

The team had their first day of five-on-five on Dec. 6. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle also informed fans of an injury. Let us take a closer look at the latest.

Carlisle had this to say during Sunday’s press conference.

"“James Johnson had a slight knee issue, something that happened back in October. I think he had an MCL strain in his knee. He is not doing anything live yet, but he’s gone through all the technique stuff. He looks really good, and he’s on track to be involved in live activity come Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.”"

Fans have seen Johnson shooting during the team’s practice sessions. He met with the media on Friday with no mention of the injury. It appears minor with Johnson returning in short order. The Mavericks play their first preseason game on Dec. 12 in Milwaukee. It is less than one week away. Hopefully, Johnson is healthy enough to take part.
