Dallas Mavericks: Resetting the depth chart heading into training camp

The Dallas Mavericks are fresh off their first playoff appearance since 2016 but have no plans of stopping there. Dallas wants to build a title contender around superstar Luka Doncic. The goal this offseason was to improve their defense and toughness because becoming a top ten D makes them a legitimate title challenger.

They did not disappoint. The Mavs traded for Josh Richardson and James Johnson. They also used their first-round pick on one of the best perimeter defenders in the 2020 NBA Draft in Josh Green. The roster has a new feel, which should excite fans.

The movement shook up the Mavericks depth chart, though. Let us take a look at where we stand heading into training camp.

The Mavs will be without Kristaps Porzingis to start the season as he recovers from a meniscus repair. The Unicorn is targeting a January return, but early in the year, Dallas will need to make up that 32 minutes each game. That should create plenty of opportunities for others to step up.

There will be questions when KP returns, though. Do the Mavericks play small with the Unicorn at the five, or does he return to the power forward position next to Dwight Powell? That will be something for Mavs coach Rick Carlisle to sort out upon Porzingis’ return.

The roster alterations could lead to some surprises early in the season, but here is where the Dallas Mavericks depth chart sits at the start of training camp.
