Dallas Mavericks rumors: Team targeting a big man with mid-level exception

The Dallas Mavericks continue to round out their roster ahead of the 2020-2021 season. They have their two stars in Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis but needed a few more pieces to jump into title contention. The Mavs decision-makers are filling holes and giving the team versatility.

The moves started on draft night by adding two defensive-minded wings and one of the best shooters in this year’s class. The Mavericks also made a trade for versatile two-way wing Josh Richardson. They added defense and toughness to compensate for their two biggest weaknesses last season. Dallas also re-signed Trey Burke at the beginning of free agency.

The Mavericks now have 14 players under contract and have used a portion of their mid-level exception to lock in Burke. How will they fill the final spot? Let us look at the latest rumors and who could be the team’s target.

Rumors: Dallas Mavericks want to add a big man with mid-level exception

Chris Henderson tweeted the rumor, which was confirmed by Brad Townsend. See both tweets below.

Townsend followed up this tweet about 15 minutes later.

The Mavs need another big man. Fans can see the depth chart here from just before the Burke signing. Dallas is thin in the frontcourt with Kristaps Porzingis recovering from knee surgery. He could miss the first month of the shortened season, which leaves the Mavs with just Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, and Boban Marjanovic as traditional big men. Dorian Finney-Smith will play the four, but he is more of a wing.

Big men still available include Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol Paul Millsap, Carmelo Anthony, Markieff Morris, Hassan Whiteside, Aron Baynes, Jeff Green, and Willie Cauley-Stein. All those players plus Jae Crowder could be potential targets for the Mavs. Dallas likely wants someone that can play multiple positions which could eliminate Gasol and Whiteside. They are limited in the money have to offer, but will likely scoop one more veteran to round out their talented roster.
