Dallas Mavericks 2020 NBA Draft prospect profile: R.J. Hampton

The Dallas Mavericks currently hold the 18th and 31st overall picks in the 2020 NBA Draft. They are taking a look at several prospects and continue to explore every avenue to improve their roster this offseason.

One of the players with the highest upside in this draft class comes right out of the Metroplex in high-flying wing R.J. Hampton. The 6’5 guard starred at Little Elm High School for three years before leaving school early to go play professionally in the NBL for the New Zealand Breakers. He was a five-star recruit and was a top-five prospect in the 2020 high school class before his reclassification.

Hampton averaged 9.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes per game but was limited to just 17 contests because of a hip injury. Let us take a closer look at R.J. Hampton’s game and his potential fit with the Mavs.

Hampton is one of the most explosive players in this class. The 6’5 guard has tremendous upside including the length to be an elite defender, which the Mavs need next to Luka Doncic in the backcourt.

The 19-year-old is a skilled player that can pass, rebound, and handle the ball effectively. He could be the lead ball-handler whenever Luka is not in the game and would form a lethal pick and roll duo with Kristaps Porzingis. Hampton has the vision to find him on the pop or roll. The 6’4 guard is at his best when he is attacking the rim.

He is an elite athlete that does not lack confidence. Hampton plays with a unique swagger to go along with his immense talent. The 19-year-old does have some weaknesses, though.
