Dallas Mavericks rumors: Team eyeing Danilo Gallinari

The Dallas Mavericks want to upgrade their roster and build a championship contender around Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. They are pursuing every avenue to make it happen. Expect the Mavs to be players in the draft, free agency, and trade markets this offseason.

Dallas will be tight on cap space, though. They can use the $9.2 million mid-level exception to add in free agency. The rest of the roster will be rounded out with minimum contracts.

Rumors are picking up as teams are just days away from making transactions. The latest has the Mavs linked to Danilo Gallinari. Let us take a closer look.

Dallas Mavericks rumors: Interest in signing free agent Danilo Gallinari

Ian Begley reported that the Mavs “have interest in pursuing Gallinari”. Begley also notes that Dallas has a desire to keep its cap space open for the 2021 offseason.

The Mavericks’ interest in Gallo should come as no surprise. The 6’10 forward can produce 19 points and six rebounds while scoring efficiently. He would be a fantastic floor spacer, scorer, and defender in Dallas. Gallinari should sign for more than the mid-level exception this offseason, but reportedly wants to play for a contender. That could meaning taking a one-year deal at the mid-level for a chance to win.

The cap space situation breaks down this way. The Mavericks want to add a third star to pair with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. They are looking for that player right now. If they fail in that pursuit, expect the Mavs to handout below-market value or one-year deals, and try again at finding the third star in the 2021 offseason when they have cap space available. Dallas wants to be a championship contender for years to come.

Regardless, it promises to be a wild offseason. The Dallas Mavericks plan on being active and improving their roster. It will be interesting to see what they can pull off. Stay tuned to The Smoking Cuban for all the analysis, news, and opinions on the moves. Do not miss it.
