Dallas Mavericks draft rumors: Team actively discussing trading their first-round pick

The Dallas Mavericks plan to hit the ground running this offseason. Donnie Nelson and the front office have been working the phones canvasing on how the Mavs can improve their roster. It is no secret that they want to trade for a third star to pair with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis.

The Mavericks may not have the assets to accomplish that, but they will make improvements this offseason. Signing at least one veteran role player with the mid-level exception is on the docket, but the most interesting pieces are Dallas’ draft picks at 18 and 31 overall. They could trade one or both for a veteran or to move up in the draft. That decision could be the Mavs biggest of the offseason.

Jonathan Givony of ESPN dropped a plethora of draft rumors on Nov. 9 (subscription required). Let us take a closer look at what he shared about the Mavs.

Givony’s sources suggest the Mavs are one of six teams actively talking trade with their first-round picks from ten to 20. It is no secret that Minnesota and Golden State are discussing moving down at the top of the draft. Fans could be in for a wild two weeks as the order could be shaken up mightily via trade.

The Mavericks are a team to watch. If they acquire a third star, the 18th overall pick will have to be included in the deal. Dallas trading for a role player may involve their first-rounder too. Brad Townsend reported the Mavs are exploring moving up into the lottery on draft night, which would involve moving 18 overall.

Fans will have to wait and see what happens. The 2020 NBA Draft is set to take place on Nov. 18. It promises to be an eventful night, so do not miss it.
