Dallas Mavericks: Is Kristaps Porzingis primed for a resurgent season?
By Jeffrey Chang
The road ahead for Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis
As long as KP maintains his conditioning and gets adequate rest, he has shown that he can bounce back. Cousin’s game started in the post and shifted out. Porzingis always could play inside or out, basically being a seven-foot shooting guard who can post up and roll to the basket.
Refinement on his ball-handling and passing skills will provide more flexibility for different actions as a secondary playmaker. Spreading the floor with shooters could also help KP evolve as a player and preserve his health through playstyle.
Luka Doncic controls the offense, but having a big man who can kick out and thread the needle has become more and more indispensable in the modern NBA. The major factor here is that KP does not have to do it all as Cousins did in Sacramento or even as the Unicorn did with the Knicks.
Porzingis has an MVP-caliber running mate in Doncic and can comfortably continue to thrive as the second option. Luka enhances Kristaps’ play by opening up avenues of attack and creating opportunities that force the defense to collapse, which gives KP room to operate either in the post or near the perimeter.
Porzingis has all the tools to be the Anthony Davis to Luka’s LeBron. He has not had a setback from his injuries as seen from other big men. The Unicorn is primed for a resurgent comeback season. He has all the resources to follow in Davis’ footsteps while avoiding a major dropoff like DeMarcus Cousins.
A rising tide raises all ships, and with Luka as the impetus, Kristaps Porzingis can come back even stronger next season. Together, they can steer the Dallas Mavericks into championship contention.
