Dallas Mavericks trade for Victor Oladipo in hypothetical deal courtesy of Tim Bontemps
On the Brian Windhorst and the Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps laid out the following deal that would land Oladipo in Dallas.
This would have to be a draft-night trade because the Mavs cannot send out their 2020 first-round pick until after it is made because of the Stepien Rule.
I outlined five trades that would get Oladipo to Dallas where my best-case scenario for the Mavericks had them giving up more to acquire Oladipo. Delon Wright and Justin Jackson both fell out of the rotation in the playoffs, while Boban Marjanovic will be the team’s third center next season. The Mavs may hesitate to move Bobi because he is a fantastic locker room presence.
The deal hinges on the two draft picks for Oladipo. The Mavericks want to acquire a third star to win now. At best, they will be adding two fringe rotation players for 2021 with the draft picks.
Victor Oladipo is a two-time All-Star that averaged 17.8 points and 2.3 steals per game in the 2020 NBA Playoffs. He solves the Mavs defensive issues and shot 39.4 percent on catch and shoot threes in his last healthy season in 2018. Dallas should make this trade if they get the chance.
