Dallas Mavericks will do what it takes to add a third star

The Dallas Mavericks are coming off an impressive season. Luka Doncic led the team back to the playoffs as he earned first-team All-NBA honors. He kept them in the series against the LA Clippers, but it was not often as they lost out in the first round. The Mavericks proved to be a force against any opponent with a healthy Kristaps Porzingis and a solid cast of role players.

The plan is to take the next step forward in 2021. Luka already let fans know his goal is to win a championship next season. The Mavs will need internal growth plus additional pieces added to their roster to make that a reality.

There has been much talk about the Mavericks acquiring a third star. They will be able to make enough cap room in 2021 to sign a player to a max contract. Fans may not have to wait until 2021, though.

Dallas Mavericks willing to spend to acquire a third star

Shams Charania of The Athletic noted in his column (subscription required) that the Mavs are “willing to take on large salaries from a team to acquire a star player”. That should come as no surprise. The Mavericks took on the contracts of Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke, and Courtney Lee to acquire Kristaps Porzingis back in 2019. Mavs owner Mark Cuban is never afraid to spend money to improve their roster.

The quote from Charania comes at an interesting time. Some teams are expected to be making financially related moves this offseason after suffering significant losses during the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Mavericks could capitalize on that by adding another star player to their roster.
