Why a free agent may look to avoid the Dallas Mavericks

Money is the biggest reason to avoid the Mavs. Dallas is not going to overpay on a free agent or sign them to long-term deals this offseason because they have the cap space to acquire a third star in 2021. The Mavericks do not want to forfeit that opportunity to grab a role player now. Other teams could be offering both more money next season and a multi-year contract.

Some free agents will avoid Dallas because of playing time. The Mavericks have a deep cast of role players that coach Rick Carlisle will want to play during the season. That could meaning see your minutes reduced on a given night. The playing time battles will force some to stay away, especially big men.

For veterans looking to chase a ring, there are a few better options. The Lakers will be back in the hunt next season led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Some could be looking to play with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George on the Clippers. The Bucks, Heat, Celtics, Raptors, Nuggets, and Rockets all think they are title contenders too. Give me Dallas over a couple of those teams, but free agents might see it the other way.
