There is a reason Bleacher Report called it a surprising trade. This one seems unlikely for a number of reasons. Let us set the odds before explaining.

Odds the Dallas Mavericks acquire Marcus Smart this offseason: 0.5 percent

The Celtics do not want to part with Smart meaning any team acquiring him would be overpaying. The Mavericks do not need to do that this offseason.

Adding Smart would also be a massive hit to their cap space in 2021. The 26-year-old is set to make $14.3 million in the final year of his contract. The Mavs could still acquire a superstar, but they would have to salary dump multiple players to make it happen. They are light on draft picks making that strategy unappealing. The Mavericks believe they can sign a big fish after the 2021 season, and they do not want to throw away the opportunity to try.

Do not count on the Mavs being able to wrestle Marcus Smart away from the Boston Celtics this offseason. It is fun to think about how outstanding he would be in Dallas, though.
