Could the Dallas Mavericks trade for Marcus Smart?

This is a difficult question to answer because Boston’s asking price is difficult to gauge. Marcus Smart plays an important and irreplaceable role for the Celtics. That is going to make the cost to acquire him high. How much? That is the unknown.

The Mavericks will not want to part with the pieces necessary to make it happen. Trading Maxi Kleber and Seth Curry would be a lot, and that is unlikely to get the trade done. Dallas adding in Jalen Brunson or another draft pick makes it not worth the cost. Smart stands out on defense but has his limitations on the other end of the floor.

The Mavs are in an interesting spot this offseason. They have the youngest superstar in the league and a second star that just turned 25 years old. Dallas should be in no rush. Finding the perfect pieces that make them title contenders for the next decade-plus should be the goal. Does Smart push them over that line? I would say no, but the front office may think differently.

There is a price that the Boston Celtics would accept to trade away Marcus Smart. The Dallas Mavericks have the assets to meet it. Will the trade actually happen this offseason?
