Dallas Mavericks: Consistency is the key to their success

The Dallas Mavericks hired head coach Rick Carlisle in 2008. They had just suffered back-to-back first-round playoff exits in the middle of Dirk Nowitzki’s prime. Carlisle led the Pistons and the Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals in the early 2000s. He knew a thing or two about winning.

Carlisle brought the Mavericks a championship in 2011. He is one of the NBA’s best coaches, and also one of the longest-tenured. Only Gregg Popovich with the Spurs and Erik Spoelstra in Miami have been with the same team longer than Carlisle. That should say a thing or two about consistency and winning.

The same can be said for Dallas at the general manager position. Donnie Nelson has been with the organization since 1998 but was elevated to GM in 2005. Only three other top decision-makers have been in the chair longer. Popovich in San Antonio, Pat Riley with the Heat, and Danny Ainge in Boston make up that group. Consistency wins in these cases.

Consistency is the key to the Dallas Mavericks success

Dallas returning to the playoffs with a constant leadership group is a breath of fresh air, especially when considering the recent landscape in the NBA. Marc Stein noted in his newsletter this week eight of the 20 teams eliminated from the Walt Disney World restart made a move with their coach or front office since being knocked out.

The latest was the Clippers parting with Doc Rivers. The move made little sense as LA attempts to win it all in 2021. Few coaches are better in a win-now scenario than Rivers.

Applaud the Mavericks and owner Mark Cuban for believing in the personnel that he hired. It has been outstanding to watch them win with the same people in place. This is only the beginning of another long run for the Mavs. Luka Doncic promises to make it a special one too. Fans have to stay tuned for all the fun.
